Dating from the turn of the century, this wonderful home in St. Henri has seen its fair share of poorly thought-out interventions and renovations. However, some fantastic elements that characterize the history of the home remained undamaged. So, when Modern Heritage Inc., a Montreal company that specializes in complete restorations and renovations of century homes, bought the home last year they created a space that reflects the heritage of the home and updates it for the modern way of living.
The designers created a stunning kitchen with a fully insulated sunroom overlooking the private garden. The island in the center of the kitchen is the heart of this home. High-end kitchen appliances, an industrial looking faucet and stunning lighting make this a unique space, perfect for cooking and entertaining. An original wood paneled wall which was discovered behind many layers during the renovation has been completely restored, and wood ceiling beams exposed.
The main floor also features back to back dining and living room. The practical design allows for the dining and den areas to be switched based on the owner’s preferences. The new powder room was seamlessly designed to look like it has always been there.
“The double living room had been separated and turned into a washroom at some point in the property’s history. My business partner Kate, and I were able to reclaim the original double living room layout, now with an unobstructed line of sight from the front of the house to the rear yard. In the kitchen, as we were peeling back the layers of wall – yes, layers of wall – we came across several generations of wall paper and finally the original bead board wall! Needless to say, it was many, many hours of sanding by hand and scraping to restore the bead board, which is now the kitchen backsplash, a one of a kind.”
Upstairs features 3 spacious bedrooms, a luxurious bathroom with soaker tub and separate shower, plus a convenient laundry zone…. we love upstairs laundry rooms for easy folding and tiding up! The old, dysfunctional washroom was removed and replaced with a luxurious bathroom suite complete with free standing soaking tub, separate shower and heated floor. The bathroom is tiled to the ceiling respecting the character and era of the house. The designers discovered a beautiful front door leading onto the balcony complete with period coloured stained glass panels that was restored to its original state.
Major work was completed on the entire property including changing all the hardwood floors, new windows and doors, new roof with the introduction of new skylights for a total of 5 skylights! The backyard is an urban oasis with a large new deck for entertaining under the leaves of a lovely tree shading the yard. It’s the perfect mix of urban location and tranquil haven. It’s difficult to imagine that in minutes you are in the downtown core.
The basement was excavated to create an additional multipurpose room/play-room, with exposed stone wall, and exposed ceiling. At the same time a concrete slab was poured throughout, creating plenty of storage space in the back.
St-Henri is one of Montreal’s most dynamic urban neighbourhoods.
Atwater Market and the rehabilitation of the Lachine Canal have brought new life into the area. A short stroll from this home takes you to some of Montreal’s trendiest restaurants, bars, cafés, and Atwater market.
